Practicalities

The HADDON project is located at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford (UK), under the overall direction of Dr Marcus Banks, a visual anthropologist. In October 1995 he was joined by Tina Stoecklin who has primary responsibility for testing and refining the catalogue design. A subsidiary project involves the digitization of single frames from some of the archival footage. These images will be included in the HADDON catalogue.

Catalogue details are currently being gathered from museums and archives in the UK. Towards the end of 1995 data from archives in Central Europe will gathered and entered. It is hoped that data from certain archives in the US and Australia can be sent electronically to Oxford for direct incorporation into the catalogue.

As catalogue data are gathered they are entered into a relational database (4th Dimension for the Macintosh). Simultaneously, trial World-Wide Web pages are being developed. Towards the end of the project the 4th Dimension database and the final World-Wide Web page will be linked. Remote users will be presented with a clear and simple search form on the World-Wide Web; the search terms will be sent to the database and the results returned to the user in a matter of seconds.

The final form of the database, together with the URL for HADDON will be widely advertised on a variety of electronic bulletin boards and in relevant journals and newsletters.
