A. C. Haddon, [Torres Strait], 1898

It is estimated that Haddon took some 2,250 feet of film to the Torres Strait Islands, to be shot with a 35mm Newman and Guardia camera. The camera sustained some damage on the voyage and only a few rolls of film were successfully shot. From this stock some 4.5 minutes of developed footage now remain (information from Long and Laughren 1993)

The extant footage consists of four sequences (the second sequence consists of two near-identical shots):

We are grateful to the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge, for permission to reproduce images from the footage. All these images are © Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and may not be reproduced.

The photographs themselves are frame stills taken from a 16mm copy of the film at the UK's National Film and Television Archive.

Haddon and another expedition team member, Anthony Wilkin, also took numerous still photographs. We have digitized several that complement the film footage. Click here to see them...
